What is Codependency, Caretaking, and Over-Functioning?

Codependency, caretaking roles, and over-functioning often arise from deep-rooted survival strategies. They can develop in response to trauma, unmet emotional needs, or a lack of boundaries, leading to patterns of:

  • Constantly prioritizing others’ needs over your own.
  • Feeling responsible for the emotions or outcomes of others.
  • Struggling to say “no” or set healthy boundaries.
  • Believing your worth is tied to how much you can do for others.
  • Experiencing exhaustion, burnout, and emotional depletion.

How Somatic Therapy Can Help

    Through relational exercises, you will practice being in healthy, reciprocal relationships where giving and receiving are balanced. You’ll learn to communicate your needs effectively, say “no” without guilt, and trust that others can take care of themselves.

    If you’ve reached the point of burnout, somatic therapy offers gentle ways to recover. We’ll focus on nervous system regulation, helping you move from constant “fight or flight” to a more restful state of “rest and digest.” This allows your body to heal and recharge.
